But it doesn't always have to be looked at as a task; think of it as a makeover for your dining room . Like redecorating your living room, I can tell you that refurbishing your dining room and adding that contemporary flair is going to be a lot more affordable than buying a new lot. Think of it this way: redecorating your dining nook will make your home look fresher and newer, and most of the time all it takes is just investing in some new dining room furniture. Usually evoking a sense of togetherness, warmth and heartiness, dining room furniture isn't something that you usually just purchase, use for five years and then throw out. With that said, you should invest in something that has a contemporary edge but will last for at least ten years. So, let's start with the most obvious piece of dining room furniture, the dining table. Really quite versatile, dining tables come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, finishes, and even heights. Since we're looking to give your dining room a contemporary element of style, I suggest sticking with dark finished wooden dining tables and dining chairs. If you remember in my previous installment, How to Contemporize Your Living Room, I mentioned that dark wood can be a tricky but sophisticated style to work with because it might darken the room too much. I still hold true to what I said earlier and in fact, you have my blessing if you decide to go with a darker finished dining table and matching chairs. My reason is because the only essentials you truly need in any dining room are just the dining table and chairs. If you are adding extra case goods such as a buffet and hutch or perhaps even a server, try not to go overboard with the same dark finish. Speaking of dining room case goods, it may not be a bad idea to invest in something like a buffet or server, but only if space permits. Most traditional dining rooms, and perhaps even your parents' dining room, may include a traditionally styled china display hutch. While these pieces of furniture are beautifully designed and do serve a purpose, they really do take up a lot of room. A server takes up less space, usually has enough room to keep your dishes and silverware and can serve as the right-hand man when you have large dinner parties it is a server after all. Creating a contemporary atmosphere for your dining room can be an interesting, but fun challenge. But let me reiterate once more, just because it's contemporary doesn't necessarily mean it has to be minimal in style! Think of it this way, if you're planning on updating the look of your home, you want to give it a contemporary style fresh, new, and sophisticated. Its a a service to set up a Mini Blog. Its site doesn't divulge much. It has a Blog, but that is updated scantily. For one reason or another I got curious plunged into it, started with an account and found out that it is really 1 2 3... and you have a mini blog up and running. It provides information about how to host it on your own hosting service. It has a couple of disadvantages: No archive that you can easily organize or navigate and no possibility to comment. Prior to Tumblr I am a slow 2 finger typist and have far more ideas and pieces of information that I like to share with my readers than I can find time for to write, or cut and paste, neatly in a well organized entry here on Chair Blog. Getting enthusiastic about Tumblr I believe any post on a Blog should go together with at least one photo or picture as they say much more than words. I found out that you can make a widget of a mini Tumblr Blog with photos. Frequently there are chairs shown at fairs or exhibitions among other furniture or art. I want to pick them up. Chairs are auctioned among other items: I want to pick them up. The quick and easy way of Tumblr got me hooked. Over a very short period of time I was able to collect photos and links of over 300 chairs. More about Tumblr Before I dug into it I missed it, but Tumblr has its own Wiki Tumble Log If you read that and the posts they refer to you get a reasonable idea of what it is about. Gina Trapani at Lifhacker had a nice entry about it. If you look up Tumblr on Mashable you get some more background information. I for instance learned that only in November 2007 they came around with the present version 3 that works as it does now. Last, but not least this Read Write Web Interview with Tumbler founder David Carp gives some additional information. Conclusions For Chair Blog I can now rapidly create overviews of chairs exhibited at fairs, exhibitions and to be auctioned. From time to time I then can summarize various developments here in the Blog. If you are as curious as me, take a RSS subscription for Chair Blog | Tumblr I see it as a temporary solution, because when you cut and paste stuff from elsewhere on the web, it can disappear. For instance when you refer to newspaper or auction sites there is the risk that they move their content around or hide it behind a subscription bar so that your links get lost. For one thing, they contribute much less to so-called visual pollution. For another thing, it's much easier to pair them with other pieces of furniture. I'm not saying that a chair or table that has different colored parts is bad, but for some establishments like hotels and restaurants, a single-colored piece of furniture works just as well. The Colors Table collection by Bruno Fattorini is a good example of fine-looking monochromatic furniture. The tables would fit in practically anywhere, from modern reception seating areas in hotels to restaurant dining rooms. The frame and legs are made from 100 percent gloss lacquered aluminum; finishings are available in orange, red, black, white, light grey, green, and yellow. The fact that this table's joints are invisible only adds to its simplicity and seamless appearance. The table top is built in; it's made of lacquered tempered glass that's about nine millimeters thick. It's made in Italy by MDF Italia. The Colors tables are available in several dimensions. The rectangular tables come in 11 size options while the square tables come in 10 or 12 size options. The large-sized tables in the collection vary in length from 260 to 320 cm. It's worth noting that these tables can be built specifically in accordance to the customer's size wishes or requirements. Some of the tables in the collection are extendable. The extensions fit beneath the table top and slide out smoothly via bushes. Services: Custom design and fabrication. Prototyping. Cosmic Debris needed a new conference table and eight chairs for their display room. We collaborated with them on the design, as we usually do with our clients. First we designed basic forms for the 8 chairs and the table. Then we worked with the client, using illustrator files their designers gave us for the backs of the chairs and the lattice work of the table. The company had specific icons and graphics they wanted to use throughout the pieces, so we worked with them to figure out the best and most cost effective way to achieve the look they were going for. Here Jeffrey is putting together one of the chairs in our shop. All the pieces for the chairs are made of sustainably harvested Maple Apple-Ply and finished with water based low-VOC stain and finish. Here are two of the final chairs: Jeffrey tries out one of the chairs. Pretty comfy eh? The large conference table was an especially creative process. The client wanted a way to have a carved look all the way down the legs, and still have the table come in within budget and have structural integrity. To solve this wonderful problem we cut a lattice like pattern out of a 1/4″ sustainable Maple, then book-matched them onto the 3/4″ Maple structural legs, giving the look of a solid leg. It turned out great. We did a similar lattice cuts on the top of the table, again using 1/4″ sustainable Maple, and again working with the designers from Cosmic Debris. Here is the lattice piece just after being cut on our CNC router table: and the final piece, below glass on the finished conference table. While talking with the client, we came up with the idea to use a piece of sanded acrylic to really pop the lattice work and center piece. It makes for a very dramatic look, and the lattice work really stands out. Here is everything together in the Cosmic Debris meeting room. Spookyness may now ensue. Made of 100% sustainable wood and water-based finishes, our interactive tables are kind to the environment, and look great in your place! This Coffee Table is large enough for a big room at 62″ long by 31″ wide by 18″ high and comes with either a with a nice thick glass or plastic top. A striking wood lattice underneath, spanning the side waves, forms a strong shelf for storage. The LEDs are only activated when they see motion. As you can see in the pictures, even though the cat is on the table, only his moving tail is setting off the lights. Without motion it calms down to a very slight attractive twinkling. The entire table pulls a total of 35 watts when it is fully active. That's less than a single common household light bulb! Using a network of 32 active and passive near-infrared optical sensors, it detects motion above the table and changes in ambient light. Made of fully analog circuits, the light patterns sweep outwards from your motion with perfect fades, glowing stronger the closer the movement is, rippling across a pool of 480 super-bright white LEDs. The Hara Chair is a 2002 design by Giorgio Gurioli for Kundalini of Italy. It is a bio-energetic seat, handmade in lacquered fiberglass. It is ideal for outdoors thanks to a treatment against ultra-violet rays and the strong resistance of the material to temperature changes. It looks beautiful indoors as well. Available in 4 colors, 2 of which I show here. He worked with companies manufacturing electro-medical instruments, robotics, etc. He is involved in the design of office furniture. In 1991 he was co-founder of "Syn Design". In 1995 he founded "Mix Experience". He planned and designed in various sectors amongst which were: Luxo Italia, Out Look Zelco, Martini and Viceversa. In 1987 he was elected for the 14th Golden Compass (Compasso d'Oro) for the design of Filly the folding chair, for the workstation XYZ at the 1989 Office Design Competition, he won an award with honours at the 1990 Tecnhotel ADI for his umbrella stand Oyster, at the 16th Compasso d'Oro (Golden Compass) he gained recognition for both the Oyster umbrella stand and his paint gun system Zeus,he was present at the 17th Triennale in Milan with the design of a robot in collaboration with ET Engineering Team, he took part on the "Mutant Materials in Contemporary Design" show, at the MOMA in New York, in 1995 he was once again called up with Syn Design by the 17th Compasso d'Oro for the book-holder "Tra".
